Caboolture Northern Bypass – Stage 2 Pumicestone Road Interchange

The Caboolture Northern Bypass Project was for the Department of Main Roads which involved the construction of the D’Aguilar Highway from west of Beerburrum Road to east of Lagoon Creek. This project was designed to reduce the through traffic, especially heavy haulage vehicles, in the local streets of Caboolture by linking the Bruce and D’Aguilar Highways.
The bridgeworks included two (2) PSC bridges, one 400m long Viaduct (13 span) over several roads, the Caboolture Showgrounds and the main northern railway line. The second bridge, 150m long runs through the environmentally sensitive Lagoon Creek with piers adjacent to the heritage listed weir. Work also included the upgrade of Pumicestone Road including the construction of on and off ramps and upgrading of local roads impacted by the Works.
Key features of this project include:
- Viaduct superstructure consisted of 6 x 1500mm deep Super T girders per span, with a cast insitu deck. Girders ranged up to 34m in length.
- Lagoon Creek Bridge superstructure girder lengths ranged up to 32m in length
- Approach works subcontracted to Bielby Holdings and also included upgrade of existing level crossing and adjacent roads
- Stakeholder and community relations were positive throughout the project and assisted with regular stakeholder meetings and continual distribution of information flyers informing of the scope and timing of the works
- Heritage structures present at Lagoon Creek were preserved throughout construction works with minimal impact
- Also significant flora and fauna requiring protection at both bridge locations. Innovative construction techniques and forward planning enabled minimal impact and disturbance throughout construction
- Traffic movements were continually managed throughout the project through use of TCPs. Measures were put in place to keep travelling public away from works and maintain through flow at all times
The project received a Merit Award for Environmental and Cultural Awareness in the 2008 Main Roads Excellence Awards.
